Hands free driving

Here in our corner of the world it is now against the law to be using your hands for driving and managing your technical gadgets - cellphones, ipods, computers, video cameras, tivo, etc. unless of course you can do it hands-free. The issue is one of distractibility. It's a fair law but I'm not so sure it's going to completely solve the problem. Not wanting to be disobedient, I purchased my bluetooth and feeling like I'd joined the crew of the USS Enterprise set off behind the wheel. And of course, I didn't get a single call. Just a sore ear from the ear piece. So for the next few days, I didn't wear it. Instead I vowed to ignore the phone if it rang. Again, not a single call. Apparently I'm not in demand after all. Yeah! So today, while doing my school taxi service I gave the bluetooth another go and nearly had a heart attack. I guess I should have test run it at home, well away from my moving vehicle so I'd know what to expect, since no one mentioned that my phone wouldn't ring to warn me of an incoming call. Instead, out of the blue, there was a women's voice shouting in my ear that I had a call coming in on phone #1. What? hands-free means I could answer multiple phones? Yeah, no thanks. Needless to say I didn't answer the call. I was too busy throwing my Trekky earpiece to the floor of the car where it rolled to the back. Great. I didn't want to talk to anyone anyway.

I'm sure once I retrieve it from somewhere in the sticky, dirty depths of my car I can figure out how to lower the volume or eradicate this mad women completely. Or maybe I'll just leave it there - if it hasn't been squashed under the 6 pairs of boots that went in an out of there today - and then I'll let everyone know, "Don't call me, I'll call you." And for those who insist on calling, "I can return your call sometime in the next seven years when my kids are grown and I can get out of my car."

I got the giggles when I read your post! Last month my cell died and because it was so close to Christmas I decided to wait to see if Santa brought me a new one. The funny thing that I noticed is while you are not supposed  to use your cell phone while you are driving there are absolutely no pay phones anywhere!  Believe me when I tell you that nobody wants to let you use their phone! When I asked (very politely ) at the 7-11 the man behind the counter actually laughed at me! All is well now because my son gave me a new phone for Christmas and it has blue tooth so I can take it with me when I drive, the chances that anyone will call me are slim, the chances that I will hear it over my loud 80's music CD are even slimmer!

Read about a study today from the University of Florida that claimed exposure to cellphone waves prevented and may even reverse the dementia of Alzheimer's disease. Sounds like I need to rummage under the seats of my van for that bluetooth piece, if not for my immediate sanity, my longterm piece of my deteriorating mind.

Now of course the study was with little mice losing their minds (from being studied on I suspect) and their exposure was to their full bodies not just their heads because in the words of the study, "you'd have to have little cellphones attached to their skulls" (clearly not practical when you are a tiny mouse without pockets) Instead the little mice cages were stacked together like a mini-mouse condo unit around a mini cellphone tower that emitted the waves. After months like this, the mental state of the mice improved significantly. I hope the study is right - that would be one less thing to worry about - but I suspect the mice did better because of the community living situations. They weren't alone and distraught over not having little cellphones to reach out to one another and chat about their days in the lab.

Here is something interesting I came across for anyone who would rather not become distracted by their cellphone or bluetooth while they are driving: iZUP is a mobile application developed by Illume Software that helps you avoid distractions caused by your mobile phone. This innovative product holds text messages, e-mails and calls while you’re driving, yet always allows unlimited access to 911 and a list of authorized phone numbers.

This was invented by a mom who realized how dangerous it was for her teen and others to have their cellphones ringing while they were driving.
